Toda Institute Holds International Advisory Council Meeting in Belgium; New Director Appointed

On July 19, 2008, the Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research held an international advisory council meeting at the University of Leuven, Belgium. The meeting took place on the last day of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) conference. Some 30 scholars from 16 countries attended the meeting at which Olivier Urbain was introduced as the institute's new director. Dr. Urbain, former professor of Modern Languages and Peace Studies at Soka University, Japan, has participated in various international conferences as a research fellow at the Toda Institute since April 2007. He was also an IPRA council member from 2004 to 2008 and the founder of the IPRA Commission on Art and Peace, of which he was co-convener from 2002 to 2008. He is the editor of Music for Conflict Transformation, the outcome of a Toda Institute research project published by I. B. Tauris in October 2007. Former Director of the Toda Institute Dr. Majid Tehranian will support activities as senior research fellow.
